Mourne Golf Club’s own Alan Truesdale battled the elements on a pristine Royal County Down Championship Links course to take the victory in the first open competition of the 2024 Mourne Open Week, the Men’s Open Single Stableford presented by Mivan.
Truesdale shot an impressive 38 points in difficult weather, with rain and wind ramping up the difficulty for a packed field of players from across the country. A birdie on the Par-5 first hole set the Mourne Golf Club member on his way, with consistent play the recipe to success in testing conditions.
Alan was presented with the first prize in the prize-giving presentation by club Captain Paddy Curran and tournament sponsor John Cunnigham, CEO of Mivan.
Truesdale held off another Mourne man, Niall Doran, who finished with 37 points with a level par round of 71 gross. Doran produced a fabulous round which included three birdies, including a 2-under par score on the back nine.
Greenisland GC’s David Hayes rounded off the top three with 36 points, taking home a Travis Matthew 1/4 zip top for his efforts.
Visiting players swept up the rest of a generous prize pool with Castleroy GC’s Gerard Callanan (34 points, (12 back 6)), Rockmount GC’s Collin Henderson (34 points), Greenisland GC’s Neil Buchanan (33 points, 19 back 9) and Rossmore GC’s Dick Clerkin (33 points, 13 last 6) rounding off the prize positions.
Mourne GC Open Week continues tomorrow with the Men’s Open Four Ball Stableford presented by Drumcastle Ltd.
