Blue skies, light winds and a Royal County Down Championship Links in pristine condition met golfers on Sunday morning as the 2024 Mourne Open Week kicked off in style with the 4-Man Classic sponsored by Motis.

The team-based format gave competitors the rare opportunity to join up with their playing partners, with the best two scorers on each hole counting towards the team total and all four scores counting on both the 9th and 18th holes respectively.

The competition produced a dramatic finale, with the team of Kieran Polly, Declan Burns, Mark Keane and Stevie Burns taking top spot by a single point with an impressive score of 98 total points. The team took home four £70 vouchers for the Royal County Down Pro Shop as their prize, presented by club captain Paddy Curran, in addition to the bragging rights in the golf club bar after the round.

The team of Polly, Keane and Burns (x2) won by a single shot ahead of Kevin Flynn, Gerard Milligan, Michael Hazard and Peter Toner, who finished with 97 points. So close yet so far for the quartet, their disappointment was softened with a generous second prize of four £50 RCD Pro Shop vouchers.

Rounding off the podium was the team of Brendan Brown, Michael Hawkins, Colm Kearney and Dermot Hawkins, whose 93 points earned them the bronze medal and four £30 Pro Shop vouchers.

Sunday’s competition was a terrific curtain opener for what promises to be an exciting 2024 MGC Open Week, albeit with the forecast not looking as blissful as it did on Sunday morning.

We once again thank sponsor Paddy Hutley and all the team at Motis for sponsoring the 4-man classic and the donation of such generous prizes for the competitors.

Open Week continues tomorrow, with a full day of tee times for the Men’s Open Single Stableford sponsored by Mivan.
