Mourne Golf Club News

04/05/2022

With the golfing season now firmly up and running, club and team competitions have been coming thick and fast at Mourne Golf Club.

The recent April Medal was played on the Championship Links at Royal County Down and in some of the most testing conditions of the year with no let up for players in the gale force wind.

Scoring reflected the difficulty as three players tied at the top with nett 75s in the Strokeplay event played from the longer white tees. Sean McKibbin, Kieran Polly and Colm Brennan all made it back to the clubhouse, but it was McKibbin who secured the April Medal on a countback. Plus one handicapper Noel Crawford won the gross with his 75, the only player in the field to break 80.

The Juvenile Spring medal took place on the Annesley Links and was won by James Rodgers, his nett 69 was good enough to win by three from Callum Flynn in second.

April also saw the International Pairs Competition take place where Marty Brown and last year’s Golfer of the Year Michael McKenna finished top of the pile. The pair signed for 45 points, the same score as Michael O’Higgins and Gerry Murray, but Brown and McKenna won on a countback and advance to the regional finals later in the season.

Last Thursday’s Stableford competition was won by Ian McEvoy with 37 points. Despite letting a couple of shots go on the final green, McEvoy did enough to win by one from Stephen McCormick in second with Brian Gilleece, Patrick McComiskey, Mark Lindsay, Kieran Polly, and Donal O’Rourke the chasing pack on 35 points.

Interclub team competitions are also up and running and congratulations to Andrew ‘Condy’ Torrens’ Junior Cowdy team who are through to the next round after their win over Ashvale Golf Club. Aaron King and Darryl Northrop were convincing 6&5 winners, while Honorary Secretary Paddy Keenan and Michael O’Higgins also secured an important win (2 holes).

Unfortunately, the Ulster Cup, Senior Cup and Barton Shield teams were all defeated in their respective matches.
