The summer of golf is in full flow and last week the Mourne Golf Club juveniles teamed up with the Royal County Down Ladies’ Golf Club juveniles to compete in the Golf Sixes Regional Qualifier at Blackwood Golf Club in Bangor.
George Monteith, Rhys Hamilton, and John Gribben teamed-up with Grace Nelson, Emily Allister and Lauren Hamilton for the Golf Ireland Qualifier and enjoyed a great day on the course. Greenisland Golf Club came out on top with a winning aggregate of 52 points with Mourne/RCD Ladies Juveniles featuring very well on 46 points.
The event was co-ordinated by RCDLGC member Anita McCaw and Golf Ireland’s Rory Leonard.
Closer to home and Tony Murray was the winner of the Fred Daly Memorial Trophy in last Sunday’s club competition. Murray won with 38 points, one ahead of Dermot Hawkins (37) in second and Kieran O’Connor (36) in third. Connor Pimm continued his fine form of late to head the chasing pack on 35 points that included Danny Savage and Aidan Small.
The Thursday Stableford competition had a runaway winner as no one could get close to Tiernan Smyth’s 43 points. A fine score from the 15 handicapper, who won by four from Gerard Milligan (39) in second. Mark Lindsay and Billy Newsam both signed for 36 points with Conor Toner next on 35 points.
There was disappointment on the team front last week as the Jimmy Bruen team narrowly lost their semi-final against Killymoon, despite a great campaign from Barry Hillen and Sean O’Higgins’ side. Adrian O’Hare’s Senior Cowdy side lost to Lurgan, while John Murphy’s Junior Cup side are currently 2-0 down after their semi-final away leg at Clandeboye and will hope to turn things around in Sunday’s home leg.
This Sunday marks another key fixture in the Mourne Golf Club calendar when Martin Greene’s President’s Day take place (August 7). Martin has kindly put up some wonderful prizes for Sunday’s competition. A dinner and presentation of prizes will take place after the golf from 7pm at the clubhouse. (Please note dinner and presentation is jacket and tie with catering courtesy of Denis Orr).
