Another week, another success story as Mourne Golf Club’s Jimmy Bruen team were the latest victors as they defeated Bright Castle to take their place in the quarter-finals of the inter club competition.

Captained by Barry Hillen and Sean O’Higgins, the team has enjoyed real momentum in recent weeks and their fine run continued last week against the Bright men. Michael McKenna and Daniel Brogan set the early tone with their 4&2 win at home before John D Murray and Patrick McNiff enjoyed an even greater 6&4 winning margin.

In the away tie, Brendan Brown and Dermot Hawkins teamed up for an all-important 2-holes win, while Jack Keenan and Ryan Brannigan tied their game. Oliver Brogan and Gerry Vaughan lost 2&1 but the overall outcome was already secured.

Mourne now take on Holywood in the last eight.

Elsewhere, Adrian O’Hare’s Senior Cowdy side got off to a good start in their away tie to Silverwood. They narrowly lost 10.5-9.5 to set up a strong foundation for the return leg at Newcastle on Sunday (June 19). There were notable performances at Silverwood, not least by Conor Pimm and Ryan Brannigan, who both won 3.5 points out of a possible four away from home.

Andy Torrens’ Junior Cowdy side were also in action and lost their first leg 3-1 against Spa Golf Club and will play the return leg on June 25.

Last Sunday’s June Medal was won by Daniel O’Rourke with a fine nett 71 score on a difficult day when the wind blew many players off course. O’Rourke plotted a steady course and picked up a solitary birdie at the 11th to win by two shots from Kenny McGaw, Stephen Barker and Brendan Crawford. Barker carded the low round of the day with his gross 72 that contained two birdies and just three bogeys.

This Friday will see one of the highlights of the golfing calendar take place for John Heaney’s Captain’s Day. The day is sure to be a celebration at Mourne with a full timesheet and the prospect of good weather for a day on the links. Full details and pictures to follow next week.
