A packed lounge for the end of season presentation of prizes meant there was stardust scattered everywhere in the juvenile ranks as some sensational golf over the year was recognised and rewarded.

The Juvenile Annual at Home took place at Mourne Golf Club last Sunday, the final major competition of the year that also combined the presentation of perpetual trophies. With such fantastic golf from the juvenile section all year, it was difficult to know where to start.

Kicking off with the Juvenile Annual at Home, there was one standout performance as Paddy Jennings left everyone in his wake with his winning score of 53 points. Jennings was simply in a league of his own and his leading tally left him seven clear of Harry Martin’s fantastic 46 points in second.

Matthew Murphy was also in flying form as the three-handicapper dipped under par on the Annesley Links to secure third with 42 points. His efforts also seen him take the gross prize. James Rodgers finished fourth on 41 points to round of a simply brilliant season. Caolan Northrop was next on 38, two ahead of Callum Flynn (36).

On a day when senior members and parents put up prizes, fittingly there were prizes for every juvenile who played on the day

Juvenile Convenor Paddy Curran rolled onto the annual trophy presentation and was ably flanked by Juvenile Captain Sean O’Neill, current club Captain Gareth Malley and club President Martin Greene, who were on hand to present the prizes.

In no particular order, Callum Flynn won the Mourne Shield, Harry Martin received the Hanna Putter while John Gribben won the Castlewellan Cup. Martin was back up to receive the Lions Junior Cup while father and son pair of Paul and Aaron O’Boyle won the Gerry Toner Senior & Junior Competition, while Murphy picked up the Kingfisher Trophy.

Earlier in the season, Murphy also won the Spring Medal, Logan Deegan landed the May Medal, while Flynn won the Summer Medal. Murphy’s dominant season continued with the July Medal, while Eoin White took home the September Medal and Rodgers won the Harvest Medal.

Several key trophies were kept to the end and a very special trophy, Clubman of the Year, presented by President Greene went to Callum Flynn for the second consecutive year. Flynn was praised for his efforts and helpful ways all season and was a worthy recipient once more. The P&T Lavery Trophy goes to the most improved golfer of the year and once again, there was only one winner. In a phenomenal year, Ryan Thornton went from his first handicap of 33 before tumbling down to 10 in just one season to be recognised as most improved player in 2023.

All of which left it to announce the big one for the year. After all the formulas and calculations were done, the Mourne Juvenile Golfer of the Year 2023 went to James Rodgers with an outstanding 140 points. Every week Rodgers teed it up he was seemingly in contention and his consistent play throughout the entire season was rewarded with the Golfer of the Year title.

Congratulations to all the Juveniles and particularly to Juvenile Captain Sean O’Neill who led the juvenile section with such distinction all year.
