Mourne Golf Club News

On a busy evening at Mourne Golf Club last Sunday there was plenty of excellent scoring in the season-ending Annual at Home while the presentations of trophies for the 2024 season also took place.

When the calm conditions of last week continued into the weekend, it was inevitable there would be some great scoring over the Championship Links at Royal County Down for the Annual at Home. And there was none better than Mark Lindsay, who was a clear winner with his excellent score of 45 points.

Lindsay is part of the dedicated Match & Handicapping team so you can be sure his winning score was checked and doubled checked before the presentation evening. Lindsay finished two clear of Adrian Rodgers in second with his score of 43 points.

There was quite a chasing pack all tied on 42 points that included Colin Molloy, Callum McDonald, Darryl Northrop and Ryan Brannigan, who all returned 42 points. Kevin Murray, Laurence Milligan, Hugh Smyth Jnr and Mark Guinness Jnr were next on the leaderboard with 40 points.

Shout out to Brannigan for he also picked up the prize for best gross with his excellent one-under-par 70.

In the Veterans’ competition on the Annesley Links, the evergreen Oliver Lavery fared best to win and was closely followed by John Maginn in second.

The Annual at Home has a great tradition at Mourne where the season-ending event is where members and groups put up prizes to be distributed to those with the best scores.

There were many perpetual trophy winners but the main winner on the night was Sean Paul Murray, who received his Golfer of the Year trophy after a fine season. Murray was the model of consistency all season and managed to secure the Donard Nursery Cup alongside Gerry Murray.

Other notable highlights saw Michael McKenna win the Club Matchplay and receive the coveted McEvoy Cup, while Mark Feenan won the Scratch Cup and Kieran O’Connor landed the Junior Scratch Cup.

On a special evening, Kevan Whitson was also present at Mourne Golf Club as members paid tribute to the Scot who recently retired as Head PGA Professional at Royal County Down after 33 years in the post.

From all the members at Mourne, we wish Kevan and his wife Eileen well in his retirement and look forward to seeing them both out on the fairways.
