Mourne Golf Club’s season-ending Annual at Home took place last Sunday where David Hunt finished on top of a busy leaderboard to land one of the big events of the year.
The then 45-handicapper made full use of his shots to sign for an excellent winning tally of 42 points on the Championship Links at Royal County Down. Needless to say, the winner was cut for his efforts and is now down to a 28 handicap.
Hunt was closely followed Andrew Torrens who claimed second with 41 points. Torrens is unlocking the secret to contesting the ‘big ones’ for the local electrician also won John Heaney’s Captain’s Day earlier in the season.
The leading pair had clear air between themselves and the chasing pack. Liam Cunningham secured third with a tidy round of 38 points that included birdies at the par five first and another at the long 12th.
Next on 37 points was Paul Doherty, who edged out Eugene Rooney (winner of Martin Greene’s President’s Day in 2022) and Oliver Brogan. Michael Keane was best of those on 36 points alongside Kevin Quinn, while Ian McEvoy and Mark Toland both signed for 35 points.
Other winners on the day included Stephen Barker, who took the gross prize with a fine two-over 73 in a round that included four birdies.
The Veterans’ Prize was a 13-hole competition over the Annesley Links and was won by Pat Knight with 25 points. Sam Harrison claimed second on a countback, while Darryl Northrop won the putting competition.
The club’s perpetual cups and trophies for the season were also presented at last Sunday’s Annual at Home evening at the clubhouse. A full rundown of prize winners and presentations pictures will follow in next week’s Mourne Observer.
